BLOG 4.Influence of Media on Sustainable Development

People have mixed feelings and different perspectives with respect to sustainable development issues, especially when read from newspapers and other media.Looking at Britain's main six newspapers as surveyed in January 2009 about 10 million copies were sold in one month.

From my own perspective our newspapers are not covering all the serious issues expected to be covered. Most of these newspapers are concentrating on celebrities on their love affair issues forgeting the rest of the people.Very little is said about sustainable development.Yet I feel thats their duty to educate and bring an awareness to people way of lives.

Soaps are very influencial in this country checking on number of people who tune in to these soaps everyday are millions, but their problem is that they seem to copy each other on story lines. They dont as well spellout which one is good sustainable way of living instead they show competition imitating the rich and lucky ones.

BLOG 3-Empowered citizens and information on issues

Sustainable development can be made easier to maintain if there is equality and fairness among citizens. This can only be achieved through empowering the citizens to be able to have a say to issues concerning them.

Everybody has a right to information no matter one has a voice to say something or is given decision by somebody.Considering crimes committed in dark hours where nobody
is expected to be seeing these scenes. There is one who may witness or told who will have done these crimes. The only way to safe guard whoever has information is to empower them as citizens and give them protection.

I feel at present I am not well informed correctly of some important issues. Our media information sometimes is very false to the point of misleading people to what something should be. This is at times done by greedy people for money or hatred yet they end up tarnishing other people's images badly. Some information given can be used to pull someone down or give stress because of too much lies exposed by greedy false reporters with a motive to promote their own interest. If you look at so many statics published most of them end up being false some either positive or negative in order to please politicians , policy makers and promoters of programmes just for money.

I get to know some serious issues through emails, letters, calls, phone books, through newspapers ,radio, television programmes cellphone messages and fax messages.Anybody who tries to give the names of suspects should not be questioned as if they have done something wrong. If people are not empowered information may be lost because people would be hesitant to come out the right information needed either by the families, responsible authority and the state itself. For example the information needed concerning the arsonists who burnt the house of Mary Fox a 59 year old woman in Comwell who ended up dying in trying to save her son. The public was informed to write emails and any other means to assist the police to catch these yobs. For this information to come out positively there is need to empower and promise safety to everyone.

Ellen De Genres in the Reader's digest (2009)says "Don't give advice, it will come back and bite you". Some people may not give information because they may not have full evidence to what they know, because there is a lot of evidence required to catch the culprits who break law.

Margaret Thatcher is quoted in the same reader's digest(2009) saying, "Advisers advice but Ministers give decisions".Some of the complicated issues like economics, science are difficult concepts to understand yet they are to have someone to decide for us. This could be unfair at times because decisions made can be generalised or have a bias towards some people. Some people may benefit while others feel oppressed.

BLOG 2.AL GORE FILM-CLIMATE CHANGE

According to UN reports, about 90% of the disasters are related to climate change which in this video "An Inconvinient Truth"by Al Gore is trying to educate people on the concept of climate change in future lives by human action.

Al Gore`s illustrations in his film gives people an awareness of climate change by human action, so he calls for immediate change to people's behaviour on this climate change.Looking at the action by Glaciers in the Northern seas, how they are disappearing due to climate change hence they affect space in the inland. When a lot of ice fall into the sea water rises moving towards land. After this has happened ,most people become homeless resulting in a lot of migration due to the displaced homes.

In this video Al Gore highlights on pollution by industries and furnaces especially in countries like China with a lot of cycling industries and processing furnaces.Too much clouds of smoke into the atmosphere causes the destruction of thin layer of atmosphere resulting in having high temperatures. All this process affect human beings and animals' normal way of lives.

Looking at disasters like Hurricane Katrina 2005 in Orleans in America and Tsunami in in Malaysia you find that warnings were given prior to disasters but nobody took heed of these warnings.UN supports Al Gore's report with his effort to let people learn on what we can do as the whole world to protect our precious planet earth in an acceptable way in the effort to conserve the atmosphere.

I find this video a good step towards changing people's minds towards restoring our world and what it holds for better future prosperity.I think this video should be seen by every generation in order to quickly bring an awareness to everybody on climate change before many lives are lost.Carbon emissions due to man made climate change should be reduced by even more than 25% to have controlled temperatures to avoid heat wave, volcanoes, tornadoes and typhoons.

Looking at initial changes in climate and how fast it is going this may continue to be worse if the world does not enhance efforts for risk reduction. All those who have seen the video should have felt a great change in their way of lives in trying to stop climate change. From the way I look at teachings from this video I think Al Gore succeeded in his effort to put his message across to people.

The UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction ,officially announced that some 236,000 people lost their lives last in 300 disaster ,while damages exceed 180 billion U.S dollars. This only can be minimised if people change their life styles towards climate change.

learning for sustanable development

Simon Dresner(2002;p60)in "The Principles of Sustainability" describes the concept of sustainable development as the one which tries to put environment concern considering economic growth, seeking to make a good balance of one`s life style ideas. In theory sustainable development is that what you can do to utilise your environment to suite your needs to have affordable life style.

I am learning to be sustainable by all means considering my present situation where I have to travel all the way from Coventry to Northampton at least three to four times a week.I am driving a seven seater gas guzzler car on my own which is very unsustainable in a current hardship time.I need to change this car for a smaller manageable economic car immediately.I am finding it difficult to do it as I wish, because every body is trying to have as small cars as possible. It will take me some time to find a buyer for my car to change it for a smaller one.

Looking at the distance I travel of 40 miles single journey for the above number of times a week they need to be cut by leaving near university .This again its not all that easy because I am a family man of four, with three of of my children still going to school. I have to see to it that they have gone to school on daily basis before I start to travel to Northampton. This makes it more difficult for me to be on time at university unless all starting lessons from nine are changed to ten o'clock to give a little gap between schools starting times with that of university. This again cannot be easily done due to allocation of times for different discipline timetables.

I try to be sustainable by supporting the idea of reducing carbon emission from use of house energy by turning off all the lights and gadgets when not in use, turning off gas when not badly cold.At times this can be not possible due to different views of people in my house on when to turn heating on or off .On use of electricity and other gadgets I may think its all done but with teenagers in the house some gadgets like play stations,computers,x-box and other game stations may be switched on throughout the night without my knowledge.

In trying to keep the environment and conserving resources I also do recycling for all that needs to be recycled.I find this recycling at times disheartening because you should sort out recycled material by texture,if you mix up with other rubbish the bin men wont collect. This means you need to find somebody to do it for you or you do it yourself costing money which I am struggling to have at current.

I try by all means to keep my body healthy by eating health food everyday but at times the food will be cold, having nowhere to warm it.
